Test Requirements

Testing is an integral element of your martial arts experience. You will need to demonstrate sufficient mastery at every level of increasingly harder skills. Below you will find the exact requirements for each belt below black to pass your Tang Soo Do test.

Here are some additional articles you may find helpful:


Most schools will assign you a white belt on your first lesson.  This is not a rank you have to earn, although you need to listen to the instructor as there are safety issues for both you and the other students.









10th Gup White Belts must learn:

All:
  • Forms (Hyung): Motion #1 (Hyung Il Bu)
  • Board breaking (Kyok Pa): None
Adults:
  • Grab defense (Ho Sin Sul): #1 and #2
  • One Step Sparring (Il Soo Sik): #1 and #2 (hand and feet)
Children:
  • Long Distance #1 and #2
Successful demonstration of the above at the time and place designated by your instructor will earn you the following rank and belt:









9th Gup Yellow Belts must learn:

All:
  • Forms (Hyung): Motion #1 and #2 (Hyung Il Bu and Hyung E Bu)
Adults:
  • Grab defense (Ho Sin Sul): #3 and #4
  • One Step Sparring (Il Soo Sik): #3 and #4 (hand and feet)
  • Board Break (Kyok Pa): Outside to Inside chop (Pakeso Onro Soo Do Kyung Kyuk)
Children:
  • Long Distance #3 and #4
  • Board Break (Kyok Pa): Downward Hammer Fist (Kwan Do)
Successful demonstration of the above will earn you the following rank and belt:









8th Gup Orange Belts must learn:

All:
  • Forms (Hyung): Motion #3 and #4 (Hyung Sam Bu and Pyung Ahn Cho Dan)
Adults:
  • Grab defense (Ho Sin Sul): #5 and #6
  • One Step Sparring (Il Soo Sik): #5 and #6 (hand and feet)
  • Board Break - Men (Kyok Pa): Middle Punch (Chun Dan Kyung Kyuk)
  • Board Break - Women (Kyok Pa): Palm Strike (Kwan Soo Kyung Kyuk)
Children:
  • Long Distance #3 and #4
  • Board Break (Kyok Pa): Downward Karate Chop (Soo Do)
Successful demonstration of the above will earn you the following rank and belt:









7th Gup Orange Belts must learn:

All:
  • Forms (Hyung): Pyung Ahn Cho Dan and Pyung Ahn E Dan
  • Board Break (Kyok Pa): Elbow Strike (Pal Koop Kyung Kyuk)
Adults:
  • Grab defense (Ho Sin Sul): #7 and #8
  • One Step Sparring (Il Soo Sik): #7 and #8 (hand and feet)
Children:
  • Long Distance #1 through #6
Successful demonstration of the above will earn you the following rank and belt:









6th Gup Green Belts must learn:

All:
  • Forms (Hyung): Pyung Ahn E Dan and Pyung Ahn Sam Dan
  • Board Break (Kyok Pa): Running Jump Front Snap Kick (E Dan Aup Cha Gi)
Adults:
  • Grab defense (Ho Sin Sul): #9 and #10
  • One Step Sparring (Il Soo Sik): #9 and #10 (hand and feet)
Children:
  • Long Distance #7 through #8
Successful demonstration of the above will earn you the following rank and belt:









5th Gup Green Belts must learn:

All:
  • Forms (Hyung): Pyung Ahn Sam Dan and Pyung Ahn Sa Dan
  • Board Break (Kyok Pa): Flying Side Kick (E Dan Yup Cha Gi)
Adults:
  • Grab defense (Ho Sin Sul): #11 and #12
  • One Step Sparring (Il Soo Sik): #11 and #12 (hand and feet)
Children:
  • Long Distance #9 through #10
Successful demonstration of the above will earn you the following rank and belt:









4th Gup Green Belts must learn:

All:
  • Forms (Hyung): Pyung Ahn Sa Dan and Pyung Ahn O Dan
  • Board Break (Kyok Pa): Back Wheel Kick (Dulryo Dwi Cha Gi)
Adults:
  • Grab defense (Ho Sin Sul): #13, #14, and #15
  • One Step Sparring (Il Soo Sik): #13, #14, and #15 (hand and feet)
Children:
  • Long Distance #1 through #10
Successful demonstration of the above will earn you the following rank and belt:
