One Step Sparring (Gup Level)

Number 1 Hands: (simultaneous block and punch)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Both fists move to the right hip as the right leg is raised until the thigh is parallel with the floor.
  • The right leg moves forward and to the right until the body is at a 45° angle to what it was and you are in a horse-riding stance. As the body is moving, the left arm moves leftward and up and ends as a knife hand block at the wrist of the opponent’s right hand. The right hand moves from the right hip and punches the opponent’s face.
  • Step back with the right leg into a fighting stance at a 45° angle and ki-yup.

Number 1 Kicking: (Right front snap kick, punch, punch)
  • Start from fighting stance with right leg back. Call opponent.
  • Middle front snap kick stepping forward and land in a horse-riding stance at a 45° angle to where you were.
  • Pull the left fist back, palm upward, to the left rib cage. Right arm remains up as a block.
  • Middle punch with the left fist. Pull the right fist back, palm upward, to the right rib cage.
  • High punch with the right fist.

Number 2 Hands: (Left hand punch, simultaneous block and punch)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Move both fisted hands to the left hip, the left one turns palm up in preparation for a middle punch. Turn the upper body to the left as you move the fists.
  • Raise the right leg until the thigh is parallel to the floor.
  • Move the right foot forward and to the right so that you land in a horse-riding stance at a 45° angle from where you were. The left foot is actually dragged a little in the process.
  • The left fist does a middle punch as the right fist is pulled back to the right hip in preparation for a punch.
  • The left fist is brought down to the right hip to touch the right fist.
  • Turn the upper body to the right as you move the left fist.
  • The left hand is brought up and forward until it knife-hand blocks the right wrist if the opponent.
  • The right fist does a High Punch to the face.
  • Step back with the right leg into a fighting stance at a 45° angle and ki-yup.

Number 2 Kicking: (Right side kick, punch, punch)
  • Start from fighting stance with right leg back. Call opponent.
  • Execute a turning side kick stepping forward and land in a horse-riding stance at a 45° angle to where you were.
  • Pull the left fist back, palm upward, to the left rib cage. Right arm remains up as a block.
  • Middle punch with the left fist. Pull the right fist back, palm upward, to the right rib cage.
  • High punch with the right fist.

Requirement for 9th Gup Yellow Belt

Number 3 Hands: (Right elbow strike)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Rotate the body leftward 90° and end in a fighting stance.
  • Move the right hand back and then up and forward to push the opponent’s incoming arm to the left. This block is performed with more than just the hand, in fact the entire right arm and hand is held vertically and power for the block comes from the waist.
  • Pick up the right leg until the knee is parallel with the floor and pull the right arm in front of your body in preparation for an elbow strike turning the body slightly to the left.
  • Place the right foot down stepping into a horse-riding stance with the right leg deep between the opponent’s legs. Your body will almost be touching the opponent.
  • Strike the opponent in the middle of the chest with the right elbow. The fist of your right hand should be palm down.
  • Both feet slide/skip back away from your opponent into a fighting position and ki-yup.

Number 3 Kicking: (Left fighting stance, back kick, punch)
  • Start from fighting stance with LEFT leg back. Call opponent.
  • Middle back kick (left leg) stepping forward and land in a front stance with the left front leg between the opponent’s legs.
  • Pull the right fist back, palm upward, to the right rib cage.
  • Left arm remains up as a block.
  • Middle punch with the right fist.
  • Pull the left fist back, palm upward, to the right rib cage.

Number 4 Hands: (Right and left elbow strikes)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Rotate the body leftward 90° and end in a fighting stance.
  • Move the right hand back and then up and forward to push the opponent’s incoming arm to the left. This block is performed with more than just the hand, in fact the entire right arm and hand is held vertically and power for the block comes from the waist.
  • Pick up the right leg until the knee is parallel with the floor and pull the right arm in front of your body in preparation for an elbow strike turning the body slightly to the left.
  • Place the right foot down stepping into a horse-riding stance with the right leg deep between the opponent’s legs. Your body will almost be touching the opponent.
  • Strike the opponent in the middle of the chest with the right elbow with the fist of the right hand palm-down.
  • Rotate the body 180° to the left striking the opponent with the left elbow the in the same place as you struck them with the right elbow. Again, the fist of the left hand should be palm-down.
  • Continue turning leftward stepping back with your left foot into a fighting stance and ki-yup .

Number 4 Kicking: (Snap Kick, Punch Soo Do)
  • Start from fighting stance with right leg back. Call opponent.
  • With the right leg Middle Front Snap Kick stepping forward into a horse-riding stance at a 45° angle to Chun Be position.
  • Middle punch with the left fist. As you do pull the right hand up to the right ear in preparation for a Soo Do.
  • Strike the opponent’s neck on the left side with your right hand Soo Do.

Requirement for 8th Gup Orange Belt

Number 5 Hands: (Block punch downward, Soo Do to neck)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Move the left foot back into a fighting stance.
  • Pull the left fist back, palm up, to the left rib cage.
  • The right open hand moves up above the opponent’s incoming fist and pushes it downward to expose your opponent’s neck.
  • Pull the right hand back to your left shoulder and perform a direct Sudo to your opponent’s right-side neck (left side as you look at it.). This is a snap-soo do in that you strike and pull back immediately.
  • Both feet skip/slide back as you snap to a fighting stance and ki-yup.

Number 5 Kicking: (Skip left, Side Kick, Soo Do)
  • Start from Chun Be position. Call opponent.
  • Jump/skip to the left such that you end up directly beside the opponent after they have ended their High punch and step.
  • With the right leg Side Kick to the opponent’s kidney. Place the kicking leg down behind the opponent.
  • With the right hand Soo Do to the back of the opponent’s neck.

Number 6 Hands: (Right knife block, punch kidney, punch face)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Skip/slide to the left and end at a 45° angle from where you were. The right foot ends up roughly where the left floor started.
  • The right arm rotates clockwise and strikes the outside of the incoming opponents arm. This knife-hand block has the effect of pushing the opponents arm to your right.
  • The left fist pulls back, palm upward, to the left rib cage in preparation for a middle punch.
  • The left fist middle punches to the opponent’s rib cage. Pull the right fist back, palm up, in preparation for a punch.
  • The right fist high punches to the opponent’s face.
  • The right leg steps back into a fighting stance and ki-yup.

Number 6 Kicking: (Skip left, Front Round Kick, Soo Do, Punch)
  • Start from Chun Be position. Call opponent.
  • Jump/skip to the left such that you end up directly beside the opponent after they have ended their High punch.
  • With the right leg Round Kick to the opponent’s stomach. Place the kicking leg down behind the opponent in a Horse Riding stance.
  • With the right hand Soo Do to the back of the opponent’s neck.
  • Move the right leg in front of the opponent and middle punch to the kidney.

7th Gup Orange Belt with one stripe

Number 7 Hands: (Just like Number 1 with soo do to the face)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Both fists move to the right shoulder as the right leg is raised until the thigh is parallel with the floor.
  • The right leg moves forward and to the right until the body is at a 45° angle to what it was and you are in a horse-riding stance. As the body is moving, the left arm moves leftward and ends as a knife-hand block at the wrist of the opponent’s right hand. The right hand moves from the right hip as a soo do to the opponent’s temple.
  • Step back with the right leg into a fighting stance and ki-yup.

Number 7 Kicking: (Two Side Kicks)
  • Start from fighting position, right leg back. Call opponent.
  • With the right leg execute a turning Side Kick to the stomach. Do not place the foot down.
  • With the right leg Side Kick to the opponent’s face. Place the kicking leg down behind you in the original Fighting Stance.

Number 8 Hands: (Elbow swipe to the face) “ate my elbow”
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Move the right foot back into a fighting stance, but not too far back.
  • Move the left hand counter clockwise and strike the inside of the incoming arm at the wrist. Pull the right fist, palm upward, back to the right rib cage, as if preparing for a middle punch.
  • Grab the opponent’s wrist with your left hand.
  • Step forward with the right leg and end in a horse-riding stance with the right leg between the opponent’s legs.
  • As you rotate to the left (this happens when you step between the opponent’s legs) raise the right forearm and strike you’re your elbow through your opponent’s face, ending with your right elbow over your opponent’s right shoulder.
  • Step back with the right foot into a fighting stance and ki-yup.

Number 8 Kicking: (Round Kick to ear, Back Fist, Reverse Elbow)
  • Start from Chun Be position. Call opponent.
  • With the left hand knife-hand block the incoming punch step with the right leg back into a shallow fighting stance.
  • Grab the opponent’s right arm with the left hand. High Round Kick to the opponents left ear.
  • Place the kicking leg down beside the opponent on their right side (Opposite side of the ear which was kicked)
  • Use the right hand to Back Fist the opponent’s right temple.
  • Rotate the body 180° to the left and strike the opponent’s solar plexus with the elbow of the left arm.

6th Gup Green Belt

Number 9 Hands: (Like Number 3 elbow strike, groin, backfist)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Move the left foot back into a fighting stance, but not too far back.
  • Use the open palm of the right hand to push the incoming punch to the left. Pull the left fist, palm upward, back to the left rib cage, as if preparing for a middle punch.
  • Pick up the right leg until the knee is parallel with the floor and turn to the left until you are 90° from Chun Be position. Pull the right arm in front of your body in preparation for an elbow strike turning the body slightly to the left.
  • Place the right foot down stepping into a horse-riding stance with the right leg deep between the opponent’s legs. Your body will almost be touching the opponent.
  • Strike the opponent in the middle of the chest with the right elbow. The fist of the right hand is facing palm-down.
  • Immediately lower the right fist and strike the opponents groin.
  • Bring the right fist back to your left shoulder and then strike the opponents face with a backfist. This is a snap-backfist in that you strike and pull back.
  • Step back with the right foot into a fighting stance and ki-yup.

Number 9 Kicking: (Hook Kick, Back Fist, Reverse Elbow)
  • Start from Chun Be position. Call opponent.
  • Step back with the left leg into a shallow Fighting Stance and block the incoming punch with a right hand knife-hand block. Grab the opponent’s wrist.
  • With the right leg high Hook Kick to the face as you release the opponent’s wrist. Place the kicking leg down to the opponent’s right
  • Back Fist to the opponent’s right temple.
  • Turn 180° to the left striking the opponent’s solar plexus with the elbow of the left arm.

Number 10 Hands: (Chicken wing)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Rotate the right arm clockwise striking the incoming arm at the wrist. Pull the left fist, palm up, back to the left rib cage.
  • Grab the opponent’s right wrist
  • Start to step with your left foot to be in between the attacker’s feet. As you step, move both hand upward. The right (blocking) hand pushes the punching hand upward. At the same time, move the left hand upward and press the palm of the left hand up against the opponent’s elbow.
  • Push up with your left hand while you pull their fist (presumably holding a knife) down and into their stomach.
  • Step forward with the left foot and end in a high horse riding stance with the left foot between the opponent’s legs.
  • Continue rotating the arms as you sweep your left leg backwards, tripping the opponent forward.

Number 10 Kicking: (Outside/Inside Kick, Hook Kick)
  • Start from fighting position with the LEFT leg back. Call opponent.
  • Block downward the opponent’s incoming high punch with a left leg Outside/Inside Kick. End with your back to your opponent looking over your right shoulder.
  • With the right leg perform a face high Hook Kick.

5th Gup Green Belt with one stripe

Number 11 Hands: (Knee to the chest)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Rotate the left arm counter-clockwise striking the incoming arm at the wrist. Pull the right fist, palm up, back to the right rib cage.
  • Move the right leg back and end in a fighting stance.
  • Both hands move up and grab the opponent’s shoulders or clothes at the shoulders (or lapels).
  • Pull the opponents chest towards you and strike with the inward moving right knee.

Number 11 Kicking: (knife-hand block, Side Kick)
  • Start from Chun Be position. Call opponent.
  • Step forward and to the left with the left foot into a Front Stance and block the incoming punch with a right hand inside to outside knife-hand block. Grab the opponent’s wrist.
  • With the right leg, Side Kick the opponent’s mid section.

Number 12 Hands: (Knee to the face)
  • From Chun Be, call opponent
  • Rotate the left arm counter-clockwise striking the incoming arm at the wrist. Pull the right fist, palm up, back to the right rib cage.
  • Move the right leg back and end in a fighting stance.
  • Both hands move up and grab the opponent’s head, hair, or ears.
  • Pull the opponent’s head down and strike with the upward moving right knee.

Number 12 Kicking: (Outside/Inside Kick, Side Kick)
  • Start from fighting position with the right leg back. Call opponent.
  • Block downward the opponent’s incoming high punch with a right leg Outside/Inside Kick. Leave the right leg in the air, bent at the knee with the toes pointing downward.
  • With the right leg, Side Kick the opponent’s face.

4th Gup Green Belt with two stripes 

Number 13 Hands: (Double Soo Do to the neck)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent
  • Move the left foot back into a semi-fighting stance. Pull the left fist back, palm up, to the left rib cage.
  • The right open hand moves up above the opponent’s incoming fist and pushes it downward to expose your opponent’s neck.
  • Pull the right hand back to your left shoulder and perform a direct soo do to your opponent’s right-side neck (left side as you look at it.)
  • Spin 180° to the left and perform a right hand soo do to your opponent’s left-side neck.
  • Continue turning leftward stepping back with the right leg into a fighting stance and ki-yup.

Number 13 Kicking: (Two Round Kicks)
  • Start from fighting position with the right leg back. Call opponent.
  • With the right leg, turn into the opponent and perform two round kicks; one center and one high.

Number 14 Hands: (Opponent Front Snap Kick)
  • Start from Chun Be, call opponent to Front Snap Kick.
  • Move the right foot back into a front stance.
  • Pull both hands back to the right hip and then quickly bring them forward to catch the incoming kick. The hands move forward crossed at the wrist, with the right the right arm over the left. The palms are turned inward towards each other and the thumbs point downward.
  • Pull the opponent’s foot toward you.
  • Release the opponent’s foot, but continue pulling your hands to your right hip.
  • Pull the left fist pack to the left rib cage as you punch the opponent’s face.

Number 14 Kicking: (Low kick to back of knee)
  • Start from Chun Be position. Call opponent.
  • Step to the left into a pivoted Front Stance and execute an inside to outside block to the outside of the attacker’s wrist. Grab the opponent’s elbow and shoulder. Side Kick the opponent’s right knee.

Number 15 Hands: (Opponent steps back into a Low Block and immediately switches to a Fighting Stance.
  • From Chun Be, call opponent to round kick to your face.
  • Attacker performs a high right leg Round Kick)
  • Move in and to the right into a Sa Ko Rip Jaseh Stance and catch the kick with the left arm.
  • With a downward strike of the right elbow, hit the attacker’s thigh.

Number 15 Kicking: (Low kick to back of knee)
  • Start from Chun Be position. Call opponent.
  • Jump to the right, and a little behind your opponent and land on the left foot grabbing your opponent’s shoulders with both hands.
  • Side Kick the opponent’s right knee.
